Marcy Voyevod is a mixed media artist

statement

In my studio, shapes I have seen out in the world emerge as I pick up a brush and begin my work. Memories take form and mysteries unfold. Wax has been intrinsic to my work for over 20 years. The smell and softness of painting with beeswax is a soothing connection with nature.

I begin with black ink, which unearths the root of my own darkness. Just recently I could see that my color palette has been influenced by the Japanese woodblock prints from the Edo period. I apply layers of mediums, which sometimes include watercolor, gouache, oils, wax, ink, and other materials, perfect for the moment. Geometry shows up in the form of grids, lines, triangles, as well as spirals. Writing through what I’m painting helps me understand all that is taking form, but mostly I allow the art to materialize without judgement or control.

I follow this movement of energy into the depths of my interior where it leads, almost always, right into my heart.

bio

Marcy Voyevod is a California-based multi-media artist. She grew up in Southern California in a family of artists and architecture enthusiasts. Later in life, she discovered a talent for architectural drafting and design which eventually led her to the Maryland Institute College of Art and the Interior Design department where she earned a BFA. Throughout her 25-year design career, she created altars for Dios De Los Muertes, designed rooms for decorator showcases, participated in design house tours throughout the Bay Area and was published in the San Francisco Chronicle, amongst other design magazines.

Throughout her life, Marcy has maintained a creative practice, working primarily with ink, watercolors and encaustic. Her color palette is influenced by the Japanese woodblock prints from the Edo period. She makes paintings, collages, folded books, small art cards and is currently writing a novel. Working with wax for close to 30 years has brought joy and experimentation to Marcy’s work. Her images are often derived from travels, conversations, events and internal dreamlike visions. Her abstract expressionist-style paintings convey emotional landscapes, social and political structures, and views into her world.

She studied with Sas Colby in Taos, New Mexico at Mabel Dodge Luhan’s house and then in Mallorca, Spain. Since 2011, she has returned to Spain, specifically Barcelona, many times. Her in-process novel takes place in Barcelona and Cadaques.

Marcy has lived in Alameda for 30 years in a 1913 craftsman bungalow that she restored. Her studio is in the front of the house with a view of her garden and the neighborhood. She volunteers for Alameda Friends and Family for Cease Fire, West End Arts District, 100K Trees, MECA, Interfaith Movement for Human Integrity, is a member of Jewish Voices for Peace and attends City Council meetings.
