During the quarantine period of the pandemic, I — like everyone else — was stuck at home. To make art, I experimented with anything and everything I had on hand. I dug up paper I had been given and forgotten about. I painted over old canvases. I used up my supply of ink, gesso, and acrylic and then began experimenting with materials I’d rarely used: lace, cheese cloth, salt, sugar, copper, film, tea leaves, even weetabix. The resulting body of work captures the dark and sometimes hopeful experience of the unknown. “Retreat to the safety lines” reminds me of a simple meditation I learned in Mallorca and Taos: repeating bold, black lines seem to elicit calmness, strength, protection.
